Last week, I was lucky enough to interview a foreign volunteer teaching in rural China, Eckart Loewe, about his way of volunteering. Eckart Loewe, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1968, began to fall in love with the countryside of Guangxi after a 3-month tour(a 3 months’ tour) in China in the summer of 1990. Ever since 1999, he has been a volunteer teacher in a village there. During the course of teaching in China, he finds that Chinese parents always pay special attention to their children’s grades, but ignore their natures and interests. In his opinion, if a person lives only for others’ ideas, he will never find the direction and power of himself.
